This event simulates a major earthquake which strikes Southern California. The 7.5 magnitude temblor occurs along the Newport-Inglewood fault with an epicenter around the Gardena area.

In each simulation, participants assume the roles of the employees and clients of The Daily Express, a regional newspaper. There are roles for members of the EOC, company executives, department managers, concerned overseers at the parent company in Chicago, and some of the newspaper’s major advertisers. From their disbursed locations, they face the communications problems that the disaster has caused, and, at the end of the session, they are asked to recommend changes to the plan that will make the communications more effective.
